Julia Buckmaster B.A. in Law & Society, 2004
Julia graduated summa cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, with University Honors. Julia’s honors thesis was entitled, “Paradox of Athenian Greatness.” She studied the record of the tragedy of ancient Athens through the works of Herodotus and Thucydides, trying to understand the tensions that existed within Athenian society and politics that were intensified by the pressures of war.

Alexis graduated with University Honors and was the AU Frederick Douglass Scholar. While at AU Alexis took advantage of the AU Abroad program and studied in London (summer 2003) and Rome (spring semester 2004). In London she interned with a firm of solicitors, J.A. Forrest & Co. She also interned as an investigator with the Public Defender Service of Washington, DC and served as an assistant in the Office of Multicutural Affairs of AU, organizing a 7-week program for 40 incoming students (STEP).

After graduation from the School of Public Affairs in 1996, Darryl attended William & Mary Law School. Upon graduation from law school he practiced labor & employment law with a law firm in Washington, D.C. for approximately five and a half years. Currently, he is employed as Corporate Counsel in Marriott International, Inc.'s In-House Legal Department.

Elizabeth Frederick graduated magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa and with University Honors. Elizabeth’s honors capstone project was on "Militant Democracy in Germany: Examining the Process of Banning Extreme Right-Wing Political Parties and Organizations." Her paper, which expanded on her major studies and her academic experiences studying abroad in Berlin, Germany at the Freie Universität, analyzed specific provisions in the German constitution, known as the Basic Law, that allow the government to declare extremist political parties and organizations unconstitutional.

Matt completed his undergraduate degree magna cum laude and also received his MPA cum laude. He was very active with AU’s college Democrats, serving as their president from April 2002 to April 2003. He was a delegate to the Massachusetts State Democratic Convention and was also a co-founder of the organization, Kerry for Montgomery County, Maryland.

Chris graduated with a double major in Political Science and Communications, Legal Institutions, Economics, and Government (CLEG). He was Student Government president for his class during his freshman, sophomore, and junior years and president of the SPA Undergraduate Council his senior year. In addition he was a four-year participant in the SPA Leadership Program and also served as a program teaching assistant. He was a Resident Assistant and also served as a group leader for the Freshman Service Experience.

Bob graduated summa cum laude. He received the 2004 AU Fletcher Scholar Award for citizenship and scholarly achievements. Bob’s undergraduate honors capstone project was, “An Education for Liberty: The Public Mission of Education and the Imperative of School Choice.”

Michelle graduated magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa. Michelle’s undergraduate honors capstone project was “World Systems of Lay Participation,” in the adjudicatory process. She researched the use of lay participants selected from their communities to sit at trials and decide legal cases, focusing on the use of the jury, the mixed court, and the lay assessor court around the world.

Nick was President of the AU Student Government from 2003 to 2004, managing a budget of $600,000 for student programming and policy initiatives. He supervised 40 students, advocated for student rights, and initiated a community service project that raised more than $10,000 for the National Children’s Hospital.

Rachel graduated summa cum laude and was the Commencement speaker for the SPA graduation ceremony. She received the 2005 AU Stafford H. Cassell Award (for total, selfless dedication to the university, profound energy, and reliability as well as intellectual curiosity, friendliness, and helpfulness). She was also nominated for American University’s highest undergraduate honor, The President’s Award.

Paola graduated summa cum laude , Phi Beta Kappa. Her undergraduate honors thesis was published in 2004, Global Perspectives on Social Issues: Juvenile Justice Systems (co-authored with Professor Rita Simon in the Department of Justice, Law and Society).
